Our Story

The story of Simien Mountains Tour (SMT Tour) began in the rugged landscapes of the Simien Mountains National Park, where our founder, Nur, was born and raised as a rural child.

Growing up as a shepherd, Nur spent his childhood herding goats and sheep among the mountains, learning firsthand about the wildlife, landscapes, culture, and challenges of the Simien Highlands. He sometimes had to protect his animals from predators such as leopards and Hamadryas baboons. These early experiences created a deep connection with nature and the people of the mountains.

Education was not easy. Nur walked long distances to school barefoot, often with little or no food, facing the intense highland sun on his journey home and the cold mountain weather on his way to school. Despite these hardships, he remained determined to continue his education.

He eventually reached Debark Secondary School and later joined the Tour Guiding Department at Debark Vocational School, where he graduated among the leading students in his field.

His childhood connection with the Simien Mountains, combined with his professional training and passion for tourism, inspired him to establish Simien Mountains Tour (SMT Tour). What began as a personal journey grew into a mission to introduce travelers to the extraordinary landscapes, wildlife, history, and cultures of Ethiopia.
