Early morning we drive from Gondar to the park headquarters in Debark. The 100 km journey takes around 2 hours. At the headquarters we arrange our permits to the park and pick up our local scout.
Day 1 starts along the northern edge of the escarpment with viewpoints over the foothills and plains of northern Ethiopia. You will encounter large troops of Gelada baboons grazing peacefully along the trail.
Day 2 leads eastward to the Gich Abyss where the Jinbar River plunges 530 meters into the chasm. Lammergeier and thick-billed ravens circle on the morning thermals.
Day 3 is highlighted by the towering cliffs of Imet-Gogo (3,926m), absorbing panoramic views over mountain valleys and strange volcanic domes before descending to Chennek camp where Walia Ibex frequently graze.
From Chennek, ascend Buwahit (4,430m) to catch views of Ras Dashen, then journey to Gondar for the sacred Timket Epiphany celebrations before flying to the ancient Kingdom of Axum, visiting the Temple of Yeha, and embarking on the desert expedition to Dallol and the glowing lava lake of Erta Ale.
